Roller compaction granulation is a relatively new dry‑granulation process for producing compound fertilizers. In fertilizer industry, it is applied for potassium chloride granulation. Granular potassium chloride (1‑4 mm) for bulk‑blended fertilizers (BB fertilizers) is mostly manufactured by roller compaction method.
Working Principle
Under compression force, dry materials agglomerate into dense and hard compacts (cake‑shaped materials) through compaction. The compacts are further crushed and sieved to obtain granular products, which is the granulation process. Compaction removes air between particles and brings particles into close proximity, generating bonding forces such as van der Waals force, adsorption force, crystal bridge and interlocking connection. The strength of compacted granules mainly relies on intermolecular forces.
